Today you'll take a walk through the De Engelenstede nature reserve. The area is named after a farm that stood in the northern section in 1760. The owner was not only called Mr. van Engelen, but he also had an angel built into the side of his farm. The nature reserve was once a heathland with fens. The nearby Wetering was dug to drain water. This area wasn't reclaimed until around the turn of the last century—remarkable! The forest was planted to support the coal mines in Limburg. At the end of the twentieth century, it became a recreation area. That's also when the pond in the south was excavated. After a detour through the forest, past the pond, and along the Wetering, you'll arrive at De Hooghei for a coffee break.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
