Fruit and tobacco: Betuwe and Utrechtse Heuvelrug

Your route starts at Residence Rhenen. From Rhenen you will make a beautiful bike ride over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, along special historical discoveries. You will also meander into the Neder-Betuwe along the banks of the Neder-Rijn. From Rhenen you will first head for the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. In the nineteenth century, there were several tobacco plantations on the relatively warm southern slope, such as Plantage Willem III. This plantation was founded in 1853, but at the beginning of 1900, tobacco cultivation became less profitable. In the semi-open landscape there are still several characteristic barns in which the tobacco leaves were dried. You meander further over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and cycle via the pleasant Leersum to Amerongen with the castle of the same name. You cycle back along the southern bank of the Neder-Rijn, through the Neder-Betuwe, known for its fruit growers.
