Around the Deurnsche Peel, the Mariapeel and De Groote Peel you will find different Peel trumps. These are all important and beautiful places in the Peel area that are worth a visit. Each place has its own story and all these stories together introduce you to the history of the Peel. Peat, raised bogs and war are the common threads that run through this history.

Peel trumps with a story
The starting point of this route is in Meijel. From here you cycle past De Groote Peel National Park and then set course for Griendtsveen. Along the way you will pass the Peel Troevens in the peel villages Helenaveen, Griendtsveen and Meijel. The Peel trump cards are'work in progress\\\': in the near future these locations will be provided with information and layout. At the Peeltroef on the Raadhuisplein in Meijel you will find two wheelbarrows. Here you will learn more about the history of Meijel in combination with peat and the war. All other Peel trumps are also indicated with peat wheelbarrows and raised bog columns.

admiring works of art
Other beautiful sights on the route are the artwork De Turfsteker and the bronze statue Het Reizend Gezag. The Turfsteker is a reference to all the men who for centuries went into the Peel from Meijel to cut peat.

The Peel
De Peel is a raised moor area where peat was cut in the past. The area is over 1400 hectares and lies on the border of Limburg and North Brabant, in the triangle Meijel-Asten-Nederweert. De Peel, nowadays a National Park, is one of the few remnants of an enormous raised moor area. Today it is a nature reserve of international class, especially renowned for its birdlife.

Natuurpoort De Peel

http://www.natuurpoortdepeel.nl

Natuurpoort de Peel is located on the edge of the Deurnesche Peel & Mariapeel nature reserve, a unique remnant of an old vast moor area. So more than worth a visit. In the vicinity of the nature gate, however, you can also cycle through Brabant forests and a quiet rural environment. A visit to Natuurpoort de Peel is certainly part of that. You can enjoy a coffee, the soup of the day or a sandwich at your leisure on the terrace or by the fireplace. The house specialties are made from products from the street or from our own butcher's shop, including the Leegvelder cheesecake or the plucked meat on farmhouse bread.

Eethuis en Cafetaria 't Veen

Eethuis en Cafeteria't Veen is located on the Helenavaart, in the middle of the Brabant mining village of Helenaveen. Nearby are the beautiful Pelen: extensive peat areas where you can still find an old-fashioned peace. A real surprise for those who are not yet familiar with this area! And those who have already been there need no encouragement to return. So come (again) for a nice walk and cycle through this striking and unique area. And at the end enjoy a well-deserved meal or drink on the beautiful terrace at Eethuis and Cafeteria't Veen!

De Turfsteker

Raadhuisplein
5768 AR Peel en Maas

The artwork De Turfsteker was designed in 1991 by Truus Coumans. The stocky peat cutter is working with his peat shovel to stick the very heavy peat out of the peat bank. The face is clearly worked out, the rest is rough, almost "muddy", left. From Meijel people went into the Peel for centuries to cut peat. Every year, a peeling field was leased and peat was put in it, which was used in the stove and for processing manure in the stable.

Peeltroef Medelo

5768 AR Peel en Maas

Dirk Verberne was commissioned by the Peel Company to make the two wheelbarrows that can be seen on the Raadhuisplein in Meijel. The Peel Company is working on making special locations in De Peel visible. Together with the new fountain, this intersection in De Peel will have its own atmosphere, in which the story of Meijel, peat, war and high moor is told.

Het Reizend Gezag

5768 CG Peel en Maas

The bronze statue The Traveling Authority resembles a bishop on horseback, but is a 'authority figure'. Like everyone else, he had to go through this street for centuries to get from one side of the Peel to the other. The Dorpsstraat in Meijel, along which this artwork can be seen, was part of the road from Den Bosch to Cologne: the Peelrandbreuk. To emphasize the 'authority', the artist Dolf Wang made the traveler proportionally larger than the horse.
