Peatlands along the German border

Follow the German border and you will pass true natural gems. It's wonderful touring here in the border area!

Piepermolen
From your starting point just outside Eibergen you first drive to Rekken, a picturesque village on the Berkel river. You will see some monumental farms from the nineteenth century. You will also cycle past the Piepermolen, a flour mill from 1796. The mill has nothing to do with potatoes, but takes its name from the family that owned it between 1907 and 1965. The Piepermolen has a striking shape and is a national monument.

German border
You follow the river and later the German border north, along the Witte Veen. This heathland and forest area used to be a popular border crossing for smugglers. The Aamsveen, a little further away, was created after excavation of the raised peat. You will find wet swamp forests, heathland and poor grassland: a special combination where a wide diversity of animals feel at home.
