Turnhout is a wonderful area for cycling through nature. Discover gems like the Turnhout Fens, the De Hoge Mouw dune area, and the forests and heathland of De Liereman.
Turnhout Fen Area
From your starting point, you'll enter the Turnhout Fen Area. This ancient heathland, with its many streams, is home to numerous endangered plant and animal species. A little further on, you'll cycle through the Stoktse Heide, a diverse landscape of meadows, deciduous and coniferous forests. It's wonderfully quiet here, just like in the Beerse Heide, the next nature reserve on your route. What a joy it is to be surrounded by greenery in the Kempen region.
The Liereman
Country roads lead you to De Hoge Mouw, a dune area that once reached a height of 30 meters. Trees are planted here to prevent further erosion. Above Oud-Turnhout, you'll cycle right past De Liereman, one of Belgium's oldest protected nature reserves. Continue on to the visitor center, where you'll find a wonderful exhibition about the area. The trip ends at the Baalse Hei campsite, where you can relax with a local beer or a typical regional dish.
