Cycling through the beautiful surroundings of Rhenen

You can take a beautiful bike ride around Rhenen with lots of variety. You drive through the Gelderse Vallei, the forests on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and along the Nederrijn. Along the way you will pass some sights.

Heimerstein Castle
If you drive down the Grebbeberg, you will soon pass Heimerstein Castle. The castle originally dates from the fourteenth century. It was completely destroyed during the Battle of Grebbeberg in 1940. The castle was rebuilt in 1946, although not in the old style. You drive into the Gelderse Vallei along the Valleikanaal. This area was already developed in the Middle Ages: you will see long straight roads and vast meadows. It is wonderfully quiet cycling here.

Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Just past Veenendaal, a former peat colony, you drive onto the rolling Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Deciduous and coniferous trees grow together in the extensive forests. Here you drive through an oasis of peace that is only disturbed by chattering birds or laughing woodpeckers. A little later you drive through the vast landscape along the banks of the Lower Rhine. What a beautiful contrast with the woods. The route ends at't Paviljoen Rhenen (Bar/Lounge, Restaurant & Hotel).
