Description
Zeelandic Flanders has a beautiful coastline, but the hinterland is also well worth exploring. Watching ships on the Western Scheldt, discovering Breskens, enjoying rural views: a wonderful, varied cycling route.
Saint Pier
A day trip to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen feels almost like a day in another country. This isn't surprising, as the region is strongly influenced by Flanders' culture. You'll hear it, for example, in the Flemish accent of many residents. Soon you'll cycle into Nieuwvliet, known locally as Sinte Pier. This small village is actually two parts: Nieuwvliet-Dorp and Nieuwvliet-Bad. This bike tour takes you through Nieuwvliet-Dorp, which dates back to around 1600.
Breskens
The route continues, passing the unique Waterdunen nature reserve. You also pass the mouth of the Western Scheldt. This is a strategic point where many ships pass by: Breskens, just a little further on, is a true maritime city with its own fishing harbour and modern marina. Via the hinterland, you cycle back towards Schoondijke.
