Bourtange steals the show here in the east of Groningen, but there are more nice places to be found. Discover them all, by bike!
Groningen villages
A little further on you will pass through Wedde, one of the many beautiful villages in Westerwolde, a former seigneury in the east of the province of Groningen. In Westerwolde you cycle through a quiet esdorp landscape with picturesque old villages. Also on your route is Huis te Wedde, a castle whose origins date back to 1360.
Fortress Bourtange
Veelerveen, Vlagtwedde, Onstwedde: they are all nice villages. But especially in Bourtange you can taste the history. This fortified village still looks almost as it did in 1742. William of Orange had the fortress built in the sixteenth century to liberate Groningen from Spanish hands. Bourtange was then on the supply route that ran through the middle of the marshes. The fortress has a pentagonal shape. Be sure to get off before you continue your bike ride!
