Description
This route takes you through the green surroundings of Abcoude, one of the most beautiful areas in the Netherlands. Along the way you will pass two fortresses and other beautiful sights. Time to hit the road!
Fort near Abcoude
After just over a kilometer you can take a look at the Fort near Abcoude. This was the first fortress built for the Defense Line of Amsterdam. Construction began in 1884 and the fort was completed in 1887. Remarkably, this fort was never put into military use. It is well preserved and it is possible to visit this almost intact fortress in the summer months.
Picturesque Abcoude
After your walking tour you can take an extra detour through the old village center of Abcoude. You will find all kinds of monumental buildings here, such as the fifteenth-century Gothic village church. The Wilhelmina Bridge over the Gein is also beautiful. This quail (pedestrian bridge) dates from 1908. In short, there is plenty to discover here.
