Experience the vastness of Westerwolde

Get to know Westerwolde, a former seigniory in the province of Groningen. You cycle through an idyllic landscape that is dotted with historic villages.

Picturesque Bellingwolde
The route takes you through some former mining villages, such as Vriescheloo, Zandstroom and Morige. In Veelerveen you will see a special three-armed bridge at junction 56: Noabers Badde. Further on you will pass Niemans Molen, a flour mill from 1916. Bellingwolde enjoys a protected village view. On the Hoofdweg you can still see a few capital mansions from the golden Groningen era of grain. The Magnuskerk from 1527 and the former courthouse from 1643 are also pictures.

Oudeschans
Further on you pass through Oudeschans, a former fortress where you can take a look back in time. About halfway you drive along the water of the Oldambtmeer, which was built on a former agricultural area. A little later you drive through the idyllic stream valley of the Ruiten Aa. What a silence you experience here! The route ends at Gasterij Natuur Smeerling, which is located in a monumental Westerwold farm.
