This route takes you from Winterswijk to the German town of Vreden. A route with lots of natural beauty and characteristic cultural history.
National Landscape
For a large part of the route you cycle through the Winterswijk National Landscape, a semi-open bocage landscape of meandering streams, hedgerows and authentic Saxon farms. It will take little effort for you to switch back here and charge the battery. In Meddo there is a boulder weighing 38,000 kilograms near the canteen of the local football club. The specimen at the old town hall of Winterswijk, which was also found in Meddo, weighs 43,000 kilos: it is the largest boulder in the Netherlands.
De Berkel
In Vreden, Germany, you cross the Berkel, a small river that flows further into the Netherlands. You will also pass the beautiful Berkelmeertje. In addition to Saxon farms, there are several other sights on your route. In Winterswijk, for example, you will pass De Bataaf, a flour mill from 1801. You will also see the Jacobuskerk dating from 1869, a name that is easily confused with the medieval Jacobskerk on the Markt.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
