Lommel, green pearl in Belgian Limburg

Just across the border with the Netherlands, you can take a nice bike ride through the outskirts of Lommel. You drive through many nature areas, such as the Lommelse Sahara and the Stevensbergen.

Lommel Sahara
In the Lommelse Sahara you mainly drive between the fragrant coniferous forests. This nature reserve takes its name from the dry sand plain in the middle of the forest. Along the leafy banks of the Bocholt-Herentals Canal you drive past the Rauwse Meer, one of the largest lakes in Flanders. The wooded zone to the west and north of this lake is called De Maat, there are hay meadows, fens and marshes.

Stevensbergen
You cycle across the border to drive through the Venakkerbos and the Stevensbergen in the Netherlands, two nature reserves where heathland and coniferous trees alternate. In the Venakkerbos the height is a maximum of 44 meters above sea level, the highest point in North Brabant. It can still be wonderfully quiet in this border area. The route ends at the edge of the Lommelse Sahara where you can enjoy a snack and drink at Café Brasserie De Lossing.
