Culture and nature in the Hoge Kempen

This tour takes you through the picturesque Maasland, but also takes in the beautiful nature of the Hoge Kempen National Park. Lanaken, Maasmechelen, Zutendaal and Riemst: you have a lot to discover today!

Pietersheim Domain
The first stop on your tour is Domein Pietersheim, a former princely castle park. Be sure to visit the twelfth-century Water Castle Pietersheim before cycling on to Oud-Rekem, one of the most beautiful villages in Flanders. In the picturesque city centre you will find the impressive castle d\\\'Aspremont-Lynden, a restored museum church and the Ucoverpoort from 1630. In the 17th century, the village was an imperial county with a court of aldermen and even its own mint.

Views
You continue the route along beautiful views in Maasmechelen and Zutendaal. Then you cycle towards Riemst to view the unique Vroenhoven Bridge. On the way you pass the Neanderthal site, the first archaeological site that was opened up to the public. Get to know the Neanderthals there and learn more about the ice ages and the evolution of the climate. Back at your starting point you can spend another night at the cozy Eurotel Lanaken.
