Soon after getting on you cycle into the woods. It is wonderfully quiet here. A little later you drive through the lee of the dunes. From the high dune tops you have beautiful views of the beach and the North Sea. Just outside Noordwijk you cycle along the old deciduous forest of the former Leeuwenhorst estate. Along the way you will also pass several castles, such as Kasteel Het Huys Dever and of course Kasteel Keukenhof. As a flower lover you naturally want to get off here and experience all the scents and colors.

It is not entirely certain when this castle was built in Lisse, but it probably dates from 1375. The building is a keep, a fortified house, many of which used to be found in this coastal region. All these historic houses have disappeared except for Het Huys Dever. Around the year 1580 and again between 1630 and 1634, various parts were added to the house, creating a country house. This country house was inhabited until about 1750. Then the house was abandoned and fell into disrepair, after which part of the house collapsed in 1848. After that, other parts of the mansion also fell so badly that they could no longer be saved. The original keep was all that remained of the manor. The residential tower was restored in 1973 and it is still standing today. The remains of the castle are open to the public, so be sure to check it out.

Kasteel Keukenhof

Before you walk back into Lisse you will pass Keukenhof Castle. This castle was built in 1642 as a country house for a former commander of the VOC. In the 19th century, the castle was expanded and provided with two corner towers. The Keukenhof flower exhibition of the same name is held on part of the estate.
