In the Flemish Ardennes you take a walk through a beautiful area that is affectionately called 'Little Switzerland'. You can see some beautiful old mills along the Zwalmbeek.
Walking along the Zwalmbeek you will see a typical stream valley landscape for the Flemish Ardennes. On one side of the water is a steep slope, on the other side the slope rises much more gradually. The Zwalm Valley is one of the best preserved stream valleys in this region. You will see meadows, forest remnants, small landscape elements and salt marshes. You will also find an old-fashioned silence here. A wonderful area to recover from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Occasionally it is a bit of a climb, but it is more than worth the effort. You can enjoy panoramic views from the hilltops. Every now and then you pass beautiful farms and stately houses. The characteristic roadside chapels are not missing here either. At the Zwalm you can see, among other things, the IJzerkotmolen, an overhead watermill whose history dates back to the fifteenth century. The picturesque surroundings around the eleventh-century Terbiest mill are considered a protected village scene. Take a moment to look around here and admire all the beauty around you.
