This route takes you through the historic heart of Sint-Niklaas, a pleasant town in the Belgian Waasland. A walk with many sights, such as mansions, churches and art deco houses.

St. Nicholas Church
Sint-Niklaas is named after Nicholas of Myra, the saint also known as Sinterklaas. So it's no surprise that you will find the Sint-Nicolaaskerk there. It was built in the thirteenth century. In 1690, Sint-Niklaas was ravaged by a disastrous fire that had started in a jenever distillery. The Sint-Nicolaaskerk was also damaged, it was rebuilt in baroque style. Close to this church is the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk from 1844. On the tower is a six meter high gilded statue of Mary, popularly called Miet Verguld.

Walburg Castle
In Sint-Niklaas you will find the largest market square in Belgium, it was established in 1248. In addition to the Sint-Nicolaaskerk, you can see the neoclassical town hall from the nineteenth century here. Its predecessor (the Parish House) is located on the other side of the Grote Markt and was built in 1663. There is a historical landmark in every street on your route. On Castrodreef, for example, you can walk past the seventeenth-century Castrohof. Further on you will pass another gem: Kasteel Walburg. This moated castle originally dates from the sixteenth century.
