Description

From the dike along the Scheldt it is wonderful to travel for miles through beautiful nature reserves such as the Schouselbroek and the Kruibeke Polders. You will also pass through Basel, a town that is on the list of the fifty most beautiful villages in Flanders.

The Schouselbroek
The Schouselbroek has developed into a beautiful mudflat and salt marsh area due to tidal action. From the dike you look out over meadows, woodland and swamp forests. The Scheldt flows on the other side, what a view! The Kruibeke Polders form a controlled flood area, here too you will see swamp forests, creeks and vast polder land. Cycling along the Oude Schelde, a branch of the current Scheldt, you not only have beautiful views, but you also experience a wonderful silence.

Wissekerke Castle
In addition to natural beauty, you will also find many historical sights on this route. Such as the moated castle Wissekerke Castle in Basel, dating from the tenth century. The medieval part is hidden beneath some renovations carried out in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The castle can be visited. The suspension bridge from 1824 is one of the oldest in Europe. During this route you can enjoy a terrace at't Pachtgoedhof, a farm tavern. How about home-made ice cream?
