Cycling route 541064
Provided by: Plan Bier
Along the Scheldt near Ghent you can enjoy the beautiful natural beauty for miles. You also drive through the Damvallei nature reserve.
Gentbrugse Meersen
The Scheldt used to be a wide meandering river. It regularly overflowed its banks and in this way ensured a natural fertilization of the surrounding land. This land was used as pasture, hay meadow and field. After the straightening of a Scheldt meander in 1870, this landscape largely disappeared. Except in the Gentbrugse Meersen and Merelbeekse Meersen, where you cycle through a characteristic open Meersen landscape.
Imperial Park
The Dam valley is a low-lying, moist nature reserve formed by a few landed meanders of the Scheldt. You will see flowery meadows, peat pits, willow and alder thickets and two lakes. A little further on you drive over the Scheldt dike along the Kalverbos, a closed nature reserve. The Keizerpark on the outskirts of Ghent is the start and end point of this route. This cozy city park is located on a peninsula in the Scheldt and is a green hotspot.
