The Vijlenerbos is a vast forest area between the South Limburg towns of Vaals and Epen. You can enjoy the tranquility, beautiful panoramas and cultural history here.

Vaelsbroek Castle
The route starts and ends at Kasteel Vaelsbroek, a pleasure castle whose origins date back to the fifteenth century. The current U-shaped classicist mansion dates from 1761. Don't forget your camera, because the building is a picture. The estate also houses the Vaalsbroekermolen, a beautiful watermill from 1776 where corn was ground. The half-timbered houses and chapels on your route certainly add to the charm of this walk.

After a steep climb you reach the Vijlenerbos. It is wonderfully quiet here between the deciduous trees. Initially you walk on a fairly flat path. Every now and then you have vistas to the Belgian valleys, a little further on to the hills around Vijlen. In the middle of the forest you can make a stop at the cozy Boscafé't Hijgend Hert. The last part through the forest is a bit of a climb again. At the edge of the forest, a panorama of the surroundings of Vaelsbroek Castle awaits you.
