The Vijlenerbos is a vast forest area between the South Limburg towns of Vaals and Epen. Here you can enjoy the peace, beautiful panoramas and cultural history.
Castle Vaelsbroek
The route starts and ends at Vaelsbroek Castle, a pleasure castle whose origins date back to the fifteenth century. The current U-shaped classicist mansion dates from 1761. Don't forget your camera, because the building is a picture. The estate also houses the Vaalsbroekermolen, a beautiful water mill from 1776 where corn was ground. The half-timbered houses and chapels on your route also certainly add to the charm of this walk.
Vijlenerbos
After a steep climb you reach the Vijlenerbos. It is wonderfully quiet here between the deciduous trees. Initially you walk on a fairly flat path. Occasionally you have views of the Belgian valleys, a little further on to the hills around Vijlen. In the middle of the forest you can make a stopover at the cozy Boscafé't Hijgend Hert. The last part through the forest is a bit of a climb again. At the edge of the forest, a panorama of the surroundings of Kasteel Vaelsbroek awaits you.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
