Stage 8 of the Cycling Path is the penultimate stage of the Cycling Path. This route takes you from Venlo to Montfort, right along the German border. Along the way you will be introduced to beautiful nature reserves, interesting sights and authentic Limburg pictures.

Up a hill, down a hill
Get on your bike in Venlo and set course for the German border. This route takes you largely along the border with our eastern neighbors. After about 9 kilometers you can take a break at Oelespot Restaurant if you feel like having a rest with a cup of coffee. You then cycle further along Belfeld and Reuver while riding up and down hills in this rolling landscape. It is not without reason that Limburg is known for its hilly landscape.

Castle splendor
On the way to Roermond you will pass two beautiful castles: Hillenraad Castle and Zuidewijk Castle. The first castle in particular is a true gem. A little outside Roermond you can settle at Boerderijterras and Camping het Spikkerdal, but you can also cycle to Montfort.

Feast your eyes
In the last part of the route you will pass one sight after another. How about Freymersen Castle, the Verbeek Mill or Huize Hoosden? All these sights tell you something about the rich history of Limburg. Just outside Montfort there is a place where archaeologists have buried Roman coins and a little further on you will find Montfort Castle. In short, there is plenty to see on this route.

Oelespot Restaurant is located just outside Venlo near the German border. The cafe-restaurant is surrounded by the Maas-Schwalm-Nette border park: a vast nature reserve that unites Dutch and German natural beauty. Such as the car-free Brachter Wald, the former largest ammunition depot in Western Europe. Oelespot is located in the old bottling plant of the former Abbey Ulingheide. Instead of Trappist liqueur, the tastiest dishes are now being made here, such as various pancake sandwiches and salads. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy your drink on the striking and cozy terrace.

Sights

Meerlebroek

Muiterdijk
5954 PE Beesel

Located on the east side of Beesel, between the Sint Willibrordusdijk and the border with Germany, is the Meerlebroek nature reserve, which was created in the late 1990s as a nature compensation area for the A73. In the earlier centuries here was predominantly moist heathland and swamp, an impenetrable area. It is not without reason that the Romans built a road on the dry transition from middle to high terrace, the current Prinsendijk, as part of the Heirbaantrac? Maastricht - Xanten - Nijmegen. Each nature reserve has its own cultural-historical past, its own landscape character. Many nature reserves are therefore characterized by something special. As far as Meerlebroek is concerned, this is its location. Situated at the foot of the steep edge, the Meerlebroek takes full advantage of this exceptional position. The rainwater that falls on the high terrace slowly seeps through the various soil layers and then, filtered and enriched with minerals, such as seepage water, flows out into Meerlebroek. Over the years, pools have been created that form an ideal habitat for both flora and fauna.

Kasteel Hillenraad

12
6071 NH Roermond

One of the most beautiful castles in central Limburg is Castle Hillenraad. A castle, surrounded by moats and a fortress to the outer castle, which is still partially moated. The outer bailey is built on three sides; there is a private chapel in one of the three wings. The outer bailey has a gatehouse, which must be approached over a bridge. The main building has four square towers covered with a kind of helmet crown, which give the castle a charming appearance, which is more reminiscent of a country house than a resilient castle, although it still has that shape.

Kasteel Zuidewijk

1A
6071 NC Roermond
http://www.kasteleninnederland.nl

Zuidewijk Spick is a monumental castle farm located in rustic Boukoul. It consists of a high mansion under a hipped roof (gray tiles) and, together with the adjoining farm, attached chapel and service buildings, forms a rectangular complex with a courtyard. This whole is enclosed by a moat. The name Spieck or Spick is derived from the word 'spieker', which means 'grain shed'. In the past, the harvest was usually stored in a spieker to protect the field fruits from people who went on a raid.

Kasteel Freymersen

Frymerson
6077NS Roerdalen

The original Freymersen Castle was built in the Middle Ages, but only a two-storey round tower remains. The current country house was built in 1865.

Molen van Verbeek

14a
6077 BC Roerdalen

The Molen van Verbeek is a flour mill in Sint Odili? Nberg and it is the only stone mountain flour mill east of the Maas. This belt mill was built in 1883 to replace an earlier ground sailor that burned down in 1882 and was used as a flour mill until the early 1950s. Unlike many other Limburg windmills, the mill was not blown up by German troops at the end of the Second World War. It was damaged when British troops took the village in January 1945.

Huize Hoosden

Hoosden 1
6077 GX Roerdalen
http://www.kasteleninnederland.nl

Huize Hoosden is a mansion with a surrounding estate in Sint Odili? Nberg. The complex is located in the Roerdal with to the north the church mountain Sint-Petrusberg with the basilica and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekapel and to the east the old village center. There is a hail cross on the estate.
