A new nature reserve has been created to the east of the city of Groningen in the last decade:'t Roegwold. Time to discover this beautiful green pearl by bike.
Schildmeer
From junction 39 you drive into't Roegwold, a special mixture of old and new nature. It was created by merging a number of separate areas into one nature-rich strip. Here you can enjoy a mosaic of shrubs, low ponds, forests and herbaceous grasslands. On the north side of the Schildmeer you will pass Tetjehorn, the largest reed marsh in Groningen. A beautiful place to pause for a moment and enjoy the silence.
Picturesque Slochteren
In addition to beautiful nature, you also cycle past some sights, such as a number of old mills. You pass through Kolham, where the first natural gas from the Slochter gas deposit was discovered by a farmer in 1959. In Slochteren you cycle through the part of the village that enjoys a protected village view. Here you will see, among other things, the Fraeylemaborg, one of the best preserved Groningen fortresses. The church dates from the thirteenth century.
