Cycling through the polder between Arnhem and Nijmegen

Cycling in the Lingewaard and Overbetuwe regions is wonderfully peaceful. You'll find unique nature reserves, orchards, and a wealth of cultural history. For example, you'll pass the Waal Crossing Monument near Nijmegen. This is where a battalion of American soldiers crossed the Waal River during Operation Market Garden. From the dike, you have a magnificent view of the Oosterhoutse Waarden nature reserve. On one side, you see the banks of the Waal River, and on the other, you'll find overgrown grasslands. From the Waal dike, you can see the white-plastered 15th-century village church of Slijk-Ewijk: a picture! In the old town of Elst, you'll pass the magnificent Grote Kerk (Great Church).
