Description
This route takes you over the second part of the Pieterpad from Winsum to Groningen. Along the way you can enjoy the open landscape, but you will also come across plenty of sights worth seeing.
Cycling through open landscapes
The mound village of Winsum is the starting point of this stage of the Pieterpad. In the center of Winsum you can take a look at De Boog, a stone arch bridge from the 19th century. This bridge forms the connection between the former village of Obergum and Winsum. Then you walk through the open Groningen landscape in the direction of Garnwerd. Then you walk a bit along the course of the Reitdiep. Enjoy the view over the water and the peace and quiet you find here. A little further on you will pass the Dutch Reformed Church. The roof of this church is especially interesting to see, because patterns are made with colored roof tiles.
Through the Noorderplantsoen to Groningen
Then you walk further to Groningen via Wierum. On the edge of the center of Groningen you will find the Noorderplantsoen. This park was built on the spot where the city's defensive walls were built in the 17th century. Then you continue walking to the Martini Hotel Groningen in the center of Groningen. Here you can spend the night in comfort after an active day.

The Pieterpad (LAW 9) is the most famous long-distance walk in the Netherlands. The entire route runs from Pieterburen in Groningen to the Sint-Pietersberg in South Limburg. The path has a length of approximately 492 kilometers and is divided into 26 stages. Along the way you can enjoy the varied landscapes that the Netherlands has to offer. The Pieterpad has been used since 1983.
