Cycling route: 537813

A varied cycling tour awaits you around Witteveen. You will find special nature reserves, old villages such as Orvelte and lots of peace and quiet.
Witteveen is a mining village that originated in 1926 as a job creation project. It is the youngest village in Drenthe, yet the old workers' houses are more than worth a look. A little later you drive through the Sleenerzand and the almost adjacent Boswachterij Schoonloo. The path through the trees seems to go on and on, it's not hard to lose your sense of time here. Step off to enjoy the silence.
Orvelte Open Air Museum
In Orvelte it seems as if you end up in an open-air museum. No wonder, because there are still many authentic farms in this nearly thousand-year-old green village. The fifteenth-century Stefanuskerk is located in the green village of Westerbork. The lower part of the tower even dates from the thirteenth century. According to Drenthe tradition, the names of Garminge and Balinge come from the names of farms that once lay here.
