This route takes you along the levees, the old streambeds and the dikes in the beautiful countryside of Kesteren. Enjoy the view over the water and the green environment around you with this walking tour.
On the banks of the Lower Rhine
The starting point of this route is a bit outside Kesteren at an industrial estate. From here you walk in the direction of the Lower Rhine. Along the way you will get to know the beautiful green and quiet floodplains of this river. Enjoy the view of the water along the way and relax. You will also find many fruit orchards in this area. In the spring, all fruit trees bloom with beautiful blossoms as a result. It is especially beautiful here in spring, but it is also beautiful here during the rest of the year. After about 7 kilometers of walking you arrive at the edge of Kesteren. Many inhabitants of this village work in fruit cultivation.
The Grebbe Line
In Kesteren you will find the line Ochten-de Spees Kesteren. This line used to be part of the Grebbe Line, a pre-defense of the Dutch Water Line. This line was built in the 18th century and was first used in 1794 during the War of the First Coalition. In 1926 a large part of the fortifications was lifted, because the line was not used.
