Description
Between the Maas and the German border near Arcen you will find the beautiful Arcen estate. Walk from Arcen across this estate and enjoy extensive coniferous and deciduous forests, grassland plains and lakes such as the Straelens Schuitwater. You walk on this route right along the border with Germany.
Ancient ramparts and canals
The starting point of this walking route is between Arcen and Lingsfort. From here you walk towards the German border. Along the way you will pass the Straelens Schuitwater, a large shallow body of water. On the east side of this water you will find the historic ramparts and moats of an old fortress that served as a defense for the Fossa Eugeniana. The Fossa Eugeniana is a canal that was built between the Meuse and the Rhine during the Eighty Years' War. However, this channel was never completed. You walk a bit along the German border and then it's time to walk back in the direction of Arcen.
Historic Lingsfort
You will find the hamlet of Lingsfort near this route. There used to be a fort here and you can still see the double earthen ramparts of this fort here. This fort was built around a lock that had to bridge the height difference in the landscape for the Fossa Eugeniana canal. A ling was used to operate the locks.
