Description
Between the Maas and the German border near Arcen you will find the beautiful estate Arcen. Walk from Arcen over this estate and enjoy extensive coniferous and deciduous forests, grassland plains and lakes such as the Straelens Schuitwater. On this route you walk right along the border with Germany.
Ancient ramparts and moats
The starting point of this walking route is between Arcen and Lingsfort. From here you walk towards the German border. Along the way you will pass the Straelens Schuitwater, a large shallow water. On the east side of this water you will find the historic ramparts and moats of an old fort that served as a defense of the Fossa Eugeniana. The Fossa Eugeniana is a canal that was constructed between the Maas and the Rhine during the Eighty Years' War. However, this canal was never completed. You walk a bit along the German border and then it is time to walk back in the direction of Arcen.

Near this route you will find the hamlet of Lingsfort. There used to be a fort here and the double earthen walls of this fort can still be seen here. This fort was built around a lock that had to bridge the height difference in the landscape for the Fossa Eugeniana canal. A ling was used to operate the locks.
