The Hanseatic city of Tiel is beautifully situated on the edge of the Waal. This route takes you along the course of the Waal from one cozy place to another on the floodplains of the river. On the way you cross the river twice with a ferry.
Hanseatic city of Tiel
The starting point of this route is Cafe Olie B, where you can drink a nice cup of coffee on the nice and quiet terrace. Then you cycle further to Tiel. A long canal runs right through this city that connects the Waal with the Linge. This canal used to be part of the New Dutch Waterline. By opening the lock in Tiel, more water was discharged to De Linge at the time. About 20 kilometers downstream, the land then flooded to make it difficult for the enemy to advance. Be sure to take a look at the W03-Tiel - Inundation Canal in Tiel if you are interested in this piece of the city's history.
With the ferry
The nice thing about this route is that you cross the river twice with a ferry. From Tiel you take the ferry to Wamel. With the water on your left and the small villages of Beneden-Leeuwen and Boven-Leeuwen, you cycle in the direction of Druten, where you cross the river again with the ferry.
In Echteld you cycle past Wijenburg Castle. It is not known when this castle was built, but the oldest records of this castle date back to 1178. Restoration of the castle started in 1957 and it was completed in 1977.
