This walking route takes you from Schimmert through the rolling hills of Limburg. Along the way, you'll pass through the Puttersdael estate and the hamlets of Helle and Brand. The landscape here features ditches, sloping forests, sunken lanes, and standard orchards. Enjoy this beautiful area and work up a sweat on the slopes.
Small towns between the hills
The starting point in Schimmert lies on an undulating plain. From here, you descend via beautiful footpaths to the lower, hilly areas of the area. You'll walk through the hamlets of Helle and Brand, both of which belong to the so-called Upper Hamlets of Nuth near the Platsbeek stream. In Brand, you'll find several half-timbered houses. On a farm in this hamlet, for example, you'll find the inscription "Op genne Brant." Around these hamlets, you'll find many sunken lanes in the hilly landscape.
The history of Schimmert
Schimmert is one of the highest-lying church villages in the Netherlands. Legend has it that the name Schimmert originated when Charlemagne got lost while hiking. In the distance, he saw a glimmering light, and that's how the village's name came about. A chapel was subsequently built on the spot where the light shone.
