From Eetcafé de Elze you can take a walk through nature along the Limburgse Maas. Near junction 41 you can climb a tower for beautiful views of the area. On the outskirts of Baarlo you pass through the park of Kasteel De Borcht, also known as D'Erp. This castle originally dates from 1200, the current moated building was built in the seventeenth century. In the center of Baarlo you can see, among other things, the St. Peter's Church. It was rebuilt in the 1950s after its predecessor was destroyed by the Germans in 1944. Further on you will pass De Berckt. The original thirteenth-century castle was demolished in 1830 and rebuilt in the Italianate style. You walk back through the forest to De Elze. Time for a drink on the cozy terrace.

Kasteel D'Erp

The history of castle d 'Erp goes back to the twelfth century, when the first castle was built here. The castle and Baarlo belonged to the Overkwartier of the Duchy of Gelre. The current castle was built during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). During this war, the castle was in the hands of the Spaniards and was besieged by both William of Orange and his son Frederik Hendrik. The Castle D 'Erp is currently in private ownership.
