Walking through Baarlo and surroundings

This walk takes you through the historic heart of Baarlo, a picturesque village in Limburg. You also walk along the banks of the Maas and through the forest at Kasteel De Berckt.

Historic Barlo
In Baarlo you can admire some sights. On the Markt you can see, for example, the St. Peter's Church from 1952. Its predecessor from 1878 was destroyed in 1944 by the retreating Germans. You also walk past the Kasteelmolen, a water mill from 1700 on the Kwistbeek. On the Maasstraat you can see the former Sint-Jozefklooster from 1905. In the outlying area you will pass De Berckt. The original thirteenth-century castle was demolished in 1830 and rebuilt in the Italianate style.

Along the Meuse

The route also takes you along the banks of the Maas for a while. You have beautiful views over the water here. On the other side you can see the villages of Steyl and Tegelen. You can enjoy the soothing tranquility here, just like in the nearby forest that lies just behind De Berckt.

Castle village

In addition to De Berckt, Baarlo has three other castles. A bit behind the Kasteelmolen is Kasteel De Borcht, also known as D\\\'Erp. This castle originally dates from 1200, the current moated building was built in the seventeenth century. Scheres Castle is located west of Baarlo. It was built in 1860. A little further south is Kasteel de Raaij. Originally, the fortress dates from the Middle Ages. The current white-painted house still stands on the cellars of the former castle.
