From Appingedam into the polder

From the beautiful old town of Appingedam you can drive straight into the Groningen polder. A landscape with beautiful views, high skies and interesting villages.

Picturesque Schildwolde
Groningen churches, they continue to fascinate. In Siddeburen you pass the well-preserved thirteenth-century church: a real photo opportunity. In Schildwolde you can see some beautiful farmhouses and other monumental buildings. One of the two Groningen Juffertorens is also located here; the example in Schildwolde dates from 1289. The name juffer does not refer to a young woman, but to a long pine trunk that tapers. The accompanying detached church was built in the seventeenth century.

Along the Schildmeer
You will find a refreshing tranquility in the Groningen landscape. Especially along the Schildmeer. Part of the banks here has been set up as a nature reserve, such as Tetjehorn on the north side. Tetjehorn is the largest reed marsh in Groningen, a beautiful place to stop and enjoy the silence.

Through the Ommelanden
The Ommelanden is the old name for the areas in the province of Groningen outside the city of the same name. These areas were originally Frisian. The pompe leaves on the historic Ommelander flag are therefore the same as the Frisian, Swedish and Danish ones. You can also see this history in the origin of some names. This way you drive through Siddeburen, a village that was once called Sigerdachurke, an Old Frisian name that means'the church of Siegerd\\\'. From 1350, the Frisian language gradually made way for the Low German language spoken in Groningen.
