Cycling through an idyllic Utrecht landscape

From the picturesque Abcoude you can drive straight into the former peat area. Here you will find characteristic views, historic old places and a striking amount of silence. That will be enjoyment per stretching bike meter.

Along the Gene
Immediately after boarding you drive along the meandering Gein through a landscape of green meadows with grazing cows, dikes lined with pollard willows and elongated plots with old farms. You pass the Oostzijds Molen, dating from 1874, one of Mondrian's beloved paintings. You can also see the old Liniedijk that belongs to the Fort near Nigtevecht further on. You take a short trip to North Holland when you cross the beautiful monumental fortified city of Weesp.

Picturesque Fighting Region
Via the course of the Utrechtse Vecht you drive towards Vreeland. You can enjoy reed beds and tranquility here. And of course the rippling water, the old mills and the many monumental farms and mansions. Also on the other side of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal you drive through some historic village centres. You can see here, among other things, the thirteenth-century Loenersloot Castle.

Monumental Abcoude
The route takes you through Weesp, Nederhorst Den Berg, Vreeland, Loenersloot, Baambrugge and Abcoude. All towns that are rich in monumental buildings. And that within a relatively small area. So be careful when cycling that you don't drive into the water while you are admiring another beautiful building. Like in Abcoude. You will see plenty of monuments here, such as the fifteenth-century Gothic village church. The Wilhelmina Bridge over the Gein is also beautiful. This quail (pedestrian bridge) dates from 1908.
