Cycling through Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is known for its friendliness and love for good food. Not surprising, because you are driving through a region that is strongly connected to Flanders. Due to the Flemish accent of the local inhabitants, it almost seems as if you are cycling in Belgium itself.

Braakman polder
The route takes you a few kilometers through the north of the Flemish Meetjesland. Many streams flow in this open polder landscape. You cross the border again past the village of Boekhoute. In the wide landscape you pass through a few hamlets before you enter the Braakmanpolder. What was once an estuary has since 1952 become a nature reserve with a large dammed creek, flowery meadows and deciduous forests. A beautiful spot of Dutch cultural history.

Ancient polders
In the village of Hoek you pass the Windlust, a flour mill from 1857. South of Philipinne you drive through the vast meadows of the ancient Sint-Pieterspolder and Groote or Oude Sint-Albertpolder. You will find a soothing tranquility here. The route ends in the cozy Sas van Gent, a former fortified town.

Historic Sas van Gent
Time left after cycling? Or are you staying at Hotel Royal? Then stroll around the beautiful Sas van Gent, a former fortified town. This cozy town on the Belgian border has a long history. During the Eighty Years' War, for example, there was fierce fighting over Sas van Gent. The Second World War also left its mark here. At the Generality bastion, for example, you will pass the hull of a flour mill from 1828. This mill was heavily damaged during the Second World War. A little further on you will pass the Industrial Museum where you can view parts of former factories in Sas van Gent. Many devices from sugar factories, weaving mills and glass factories are exhibited here. The Maria Ascension Church on the Markt is a national monument from 1892.
