You can make a varied trip between Exloo and Schoonoord. You drive through a pleasantly quiet forest, through a characteristic peat colony and through old ash villages. Drenthe in a nutshell.

Take pool height
There are regularly beautiful old buildings along your route. You see Saxon farms and monumental churches, such as in Schoonoord. The choir of the Margaret Church in Odoorn dates back to the twelfth century. This choir is also a rarity for another reason: up to about four meters the building layer consists of granite boulders. Just past Exloo you drive a bit through Boswachterij Odoorn. Here you see the Pools Height: a thirteen meter high hill with a watchtower on it.

Drenthe dolmens
At the Odoornerweg you can turn right to hunebed D34. If you turn left, you will see Eppiesbargie, an ancient burial mound. On the Dalakkersweg you will pass hunebed D31. Just before Eeserveen you can make a nice stop at Keramiektuinen Galerie Harwi. On the terrace you can enjoy a coffee with something delicious here in peace. In Odoornerveen you can clearly see the peat history: the rectangular plots are perpendicular to the canal that runs through this ribbon village.

This mill was rebuilt in Schoonoord in 1903 with parts from an octagonal mill from Groningen. Originally this mill was used as an oil mill in Middelstum, but in 1903 the mill was transferred to Schoonoord.
