Your route starts at Huis Het Bosch in Lexmond. The village was originally located a bit further away. At the beginning of the thirteenth century, the Lek changed its course and washed away Lexmond, after which it was rebuilt a bit further south. The Zouweboezem nearby was originally a storage area for excess polder water. The marshes and reed fields are now a safe home for marsh birds such as the black tern, water rail, mustache and marsh harrier. In the spring, more than 200 pairs of purple herons breed here, the largest breeding colony in our country! The Zuid-Hollands Landschap focuses on all these reed birds in its management. It is beautiful to walk along the Lekdijk. You look out over the babbling river and grassy floodplains, on the other side are beautiful farms, meadows and orchards.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
