Northeast Groningen has a lot to offer cyclists. Here you can get a breath of fresh air along the water of the Eems estuary, enjoy the vast nature and get to know cozy towns such as Appingedam and Delfzijl with beautiful sights. In short, you will find something for everyone here.
The hanging kitchens of Appingedam
The starting point of this route is in the village of Termunterzijl on the Eems estuary. From here you cycle through quiet Groningen landscapes to Siddeburen and on to the Schildmeer and the associated nature reserve Tetjehorn. The Schildmeer originated as a small lake in a high moor area that grew in size. In the vicinity of this lake you will find all kinds of bird species and other animals. You then cycle on to Appingedam. This medieval city is known for its hanging kitchens. Due to a lack of space, the kitchens of houses in this city used to be built as a protrusion above the Damsterdiep. These kitchens and the narrow bridges over the Damsterdiep give the city a lovely appearance. You then continue cycling to Delfzijl, where you can enjoy a bite to eat at Hotel Restaurant de Boegschroef.
The Church of Solwerd
Right next to Appingedam you will find the village of Solwerd. This route takes you past the church of Solwerd, which was built in 1783. Next to the church is a bell tower with a ringing bell from 1949. This bell served as a replacement for the bell that was stolen by the German occupiers during World War II. The chapel that stood here as the predecessor of the church was a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.
