Description
This route takes you through West Friesland, a region in the north of North Holland. You'll cycle through expansive polder areas with charming villages and towns. You can also enjoy a breath of fresh air along the IJsselmeer coast.
From sea to polder area
Park your car on the edge of the village of Wieringerwerf and then hop on your bike to explore the Wieringermeerpolder. In the 12th century, this area was flooded and subsequently became part of the sea. Construction of the current polder began in 1927. By 1930, the polder was completely dry again, and from 1934 onward, the Wieringermeerpolder was used for agriculture. Cycle through this polder to small villages like Aartswoud, Lambertschaag, and Opperdoes.

Historic Medemblik
If you stop in Medemblik for a break, be sure to explore the town center. It's packed with beautiful sights from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Admire the Waag (weigh house) at the cheese market, the many historic warehouses, and Medemblik's old train station, where an old steam tram still runs regularly.
