In the Krimpenerwaard you can enjoy cycling through the polders and along the water. This route takes you along the Lek and along the IJssel. Along the way you can enjoy the quiet landscape and the various cozy towns you drive through.

The windmills of Kinderdijk
The first part of the route runs along the banks of the Lek. You set course for Krimpen aan den IJssel through Nieuw-Lekkerland and Kinderdijk. Along the way you will pass several windmills of Kinderdijk. In total, you will find no less than nineteen polder windmills at Kinderdijk within a short distance of each other, so take the time to take a look here if you like windmills. From Krimpen aan den IJssel you continue your course along the IJssel in the direction of Gouda. You will cycle along the Reinier Blok pumping station. This pumping station was built in 1868 to pump water from the polders to the IJssel.

The last part
The last part takes you through the polders to Berkenwoude and Bergambacht. You will eventually end your tour at the edge of the Lek. In need of a snack and a drink? Then settle down a bit before the end point at Onder de Molen.

A historic duck decoy
In the Krimpenerwaard you will find duck decoys for centuries. Duck Decoy Nooitgedacht is one of the remaining duck decoys. The ducks used to be caught here for consumption, but now the ducks are collected here to provide them with a ring for scientific research and then released again.

The Schelvenaer flour mill is located along the Hollandsche IJssel. It was built in 1993 on the spot where the Onverwacht flour mill once stood. The old mill was built outside the dykes in the mid-19th century, so that ships from Rotterdam could moor to unload their grain. The Onverwacht burnt out completely in 1930. The new mill is named after Cornelis van Schelven, who had the Onverwacht mill built.

Eendenkooi Nooitgedacht (de kooi van Verstoep)

Indamswetering 1
2825 NH Krimpenerwaard

The Krimpenerwaard has traditionally known duck decoys. One of them is Nooitgedacht. The kooiker lured wild ducks with his tame ducks to the duck decoy. The mallards followed the domestic ducks through the narrow, winding ditches of the duck decoy, also called the pipe, and ended up in a trap. This is where the expression 'going out the pipe' comes from. Duck decoys are enclosed by tall forests and are therefore easy to spot.
