Tour of Mepperdennen and Boswachterij Gees

Your route starts at Hotel Het Witte Veen. You drive through the Mepperdennen forest area, but also through Boswachterij Gees. Here deciduous trees alternate with fens and heathland, and at the edge of the forests you drive through tranquil grasslands. You drive a bit along the Geeserstroom, formerly the Loodiep, a beautiful stream valley of Staatsbosbeheer. After canalization in the last century, the stream was restored to its former glory. The natural stream valley system is self-regulating. This creates a new landscape: a flow-through swamp. Now the Geeserstroom is a breeding and stopping place for all kinds of marsh birds. You will see the bittern, bluethroat, ducks and water rail. In addition to nature, you also explore lovely villages when you cycle through hamlets such as Balinge and Garminge. Nice atmosphere!
