Tour of the Old Lake and the Liberating Wings Museum

Your route starts at Boutique Hotel Bed&Bos. Between Best and Son you will discover De Nieuwe or Sonse Heide. This was once an open heath and drifting sand area, now you see Scots pines with here and there fields of heath. In the forest you will pass the Joe Mann monument. On September 18 and 19, 1944, unprecedented fierce fighting took place in these forests. German troops tried to prevent the Allies from breaking through. Two particularly brave men were killed in this battle: Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cole and Private Joe Mann. They were both posthumously awarded the highest American military decoration, the Medal of Honor. After a short distance along the Oude Meer you will pass the Bevrijdende Vleugels Museum, which focuses on the liberation of the South of the Netherlands during the Second World War.
