Discover the versatility of Naarden and Bussum

With this walk you make a tour through the versatile surroundings of Bussum. You walk around the fortress of Naarden, through the Spanderswoud and through the wide polder at the Hilversumse Meente.

Fortress Naarden
Naarden is one of the best preserved fortified towns in Europe. The fortress has six bastions, a double wall and a double canal belt. With this walk you walk around the outer canal, so that you have a beautiful view of Naarden. A unique experience. You also pass Fort Ronduit, which was built in 1875 on the remains of an earlier defensive structure. This fort is part of the New Dutch Waterline.

Dutch nature
After a while you enter the surprisingly quiet polder landscape just outside Bussum. Here you have distant views over the vast grasslands. In the Spanderswoud, nature is allowed to take its own course, so that you get the feeling that you are walking through a primeval forest. You also walk a bit through the French Kampheide, a nature reserve where you will find heaths and forests on the moraines. 

Historic Naarden
In Bussum you can admire some beautiful sights. You will pass the St. Vitus Church, a neo-Gothic basilica from 1884. A little further on is the Mariënburg, a former monastery from 1878. Got some time and energy left? Then walk through Naarden to taste the historic atmosphere. There is also a Saint Vitus church here: the fifteenth-century tower is the oldest part of this building.
