Description

Your route starts at Hotel-Café-Restaurant-Snackbar Beerzeveld. You drive along the edge of Beerze to Mariënberg. This village dates back to the 14th century, when the Brothers of the Common Life built the Hut Mariaborch from the monastery at Sibculo. This hut formed the basis for their work in the peat areas, which were then east of the current village. Be sure to stop at the village of Rheeze with its beautifully preserved village green! Nearby you can cross the Vecht on a ferry. Then you cycle past the thousand-hectare nature reserve Engbertsdijksvenen. Extensive peatlands with fens and heathland form a remnant of a much larger peat swamp that used to cover the northeast of the Netherlands. It is one of the few places in our country with active raised bogs.
