Tour of Zutphen and Gorsselse Heide

Your route starts at the De Zessprong family restaurant. To the southeast of Gorssel you will find the Gorsselse Heide. For decades this was a military shooting and training area. In the past there were vast heathlands here that were used by farmers in the area for various purposes, but nowadays there are also forests to be seen. About a hundred years ago there were mainly pine trees, but the coniferous forest is slowly developing into a mixed deciduous forest, where birch and oak also grow. In Almen the village centre still breathes the atmosphere of long ago. Zutphen grew in the Hanseatic period by transporting herring, butter and beer over the IJssel to the Rhine. The skippers brought back wine, but the timber trade also flourished. Striking towers and stately merchant houses determine the streetscape.
