Battle of the Scheldt cycle route | Liberation Route Brabant

During this 40 kilometer long cycle tour you will cross the landscape where the Battle of the Scheldt took place. The undulating terrain marked the border between water-rich Zeeland and Brabant, the province that formed the crucial route for the Allies to the Western Scheldt. This river was of inestimable importance because it provided access to the port of Antwerp. Tangible reminders can still be found on this route, including the Allied Sherman tank and the German anti-tank ditch. You will also pass the war cemeteries in Bergen op Zoom, where Canadian, British and other Allied soldiers found their final resting place.

The Liberation Route Brabant tells the story of the liberation, but also shows what the Second World War meant for ordinary Brabant residents. Eight cycling routes, spread across North Brabant, lead you past Brabant Remembert stories, listening columns of the Liberation Route Europe, monuments and museums, which together make visible the impact of the war on North Brabant. At Natuurpoort Wouwse Plantage, where this cycle route starts, there is an information panel showing the route.
