Description
First you dive into Valkenburg. Nice to get off and soak up the atmosphere! Near Spaubeek you see a large farm that was once part of Sint Jansgeleen Castle. Further on you pass Terborgh Castle, a nice place to browse around. You cycle on through the beautiful Geleenbeek valley. On the way back you discover the highlight of the route (and the wider region): Hoensbroek Castle, one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. And one of the most beautiful! There was already a motte on this spot around 1225. Due to its strategic location on the trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen and Cologne, this original castle developed into the largest castle between the Maas and Rhine.
