City walk Oldenzaal and estates

Your route starts at Stadshotel Ter Stege in the beautiful centre of Oldenzaal. In and on the edge of the city you will pass villas and estates of the former textile barons. Most of the country estates were built at the beginning of the twentieth century, when the textile industry was at its peak. Real gems to see, such as Villa de Haer from 1881. The Kalheupinkpark is located on a hill, the southern sister of the Tankenberg. The park was originally a garden, around 1869. In 1913 it was laid out in English style by garden architect Leonard A. Springer. The Sint-Plechelmusbasiliek is one of the 23 basilicas in the Netherlands. The itinerant missionary Plechelmus is said to have founded the church in the 8th century, around the year 1150 it was replaced by a building of Bentheimer sandstone.
