From Ommen you can follow the course of the Overijsselse Vecht in the direction of Mariënberg. This route takes you through the floodplains of this river with forests, heaths and green meadows. A wonderfully quiet route for nature lovers.

From primeval forest to heathland
Ommen train station is the starting point of this route, on the outskirts of Ommen. From here you walk through the hamlet of Besthmen and then you cross the woods around Ommen. Originally these are primeval forests, but most of them were cut down. Dry heaths and sand drifts were the result. At the end of the 19th century and in the 20th century, the forests were planted again on a large scale. As a result, you can still walk through beautiful forest areas here. Only here and there is a small heath or a sand plain. The forests now have a protected status, so that everything can no longer be cut down just like that.

Views at Beerze
The towns of Junne and Beerze are located on the edge of the forest area. Around Beerze you can enjoy surprising vistas in a varied landscape. You will also find all kinds of animals here. Keep your eyes open, don't make too much noise and maybe you can spot a deer.

Marienberg on the Vecht
You will eventually arrive at the Mariënberg train station. Mariënberg is a small village near the Vecht. The village was founded in the 14th century when the Brothers from the monastery near Sibculo built a hut here as a base for their work in the peat bogs east of the current village. From there, a village grew up on this spot.

The information chapel 'Mariaborch' is intended to bring information about the rich history of Mari? Nberg to the attention of a large audience by means of information panels. Three stained glass windows tell the history in a triptych. Pay a visit to this chapel and learn more about the history of Mari? Nberg. The chapel is traditionally built from oak and it has a slate roof. Bentheimer sandstone was used in the construction of the chapel, a material that is widely used in this area. In front of the chapel you will find a copy of the ordination stone from 1514. The original consecration stone came from the chapel that once stood here. Volunteers keep the information chapel and the surroundings clean and tidy, for example by mowing the grass around the chapel.
