Description
The third section of the Blauwnet route takes you from Coevorden to Emmen. Along the way, you'll cycle through Nieuw-Amsterdam and beyond, you can enjoy expansive meadows and farmland. A wonderfully peaceful area to cycle through.
Cycling along the canal
Coevorden train station is the starting point of this route. Nearby, you'll also find the H Design Hotels Kasteel Coevorden. Explore the historic center of this fortified town and see all the unique sights from bygone eras. From the historic city center, cross the city moat and then follow the Stieltjeskanaal out of the city. This canal was constructed between 1880 and 1884 to facilitate shipping. The canal runs all the way to the Verlengde Hoogeveensche Vaart canal in Nieuw-Amsterdam. On your way to Nieuw-Amsterdam, take a detour through the beautiful polder landscape, where you can truly enjoy the tranquility of nature.
Taking a break in New Amsterdam
Once you arrive in Nieuw-Amsterdam, take a break at Eetcafe Foodmaster De Viersprong. Time for a delicious lunch and a drink, so you can continue your journey refreshed. You'll cycle past Nieuw-Amsterdam station out of the city, towards Emmen.
The former esdorp Emmen
Before entering Emmen, you'll pass the Grote Rietplas, a man-made recreational lake surrounded by charming beaches. Then you'll explore the charming town of Emmen. This city is sometimes called the "open, green city" because of its unique layout. Originally, Emmen was a village on the Hondsrug sand ridge. The city is surrounded by peatlands.
