Tour of Zwin, Sluis and Retranchement

Your route starts at EuroParcs Cadzand. You first cycle along the Zwin, a unique cross-border nature reserve. This is the former arm of the sea that connected Bruges with the North Sea. Over the centuries it has become silted up. The current beach channel now forms the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. The associated border marker number 369 is located entirely on Dutch territory, because it kept being washed away at its original location. The Zwin has an active creek system of salt marshes, mudflats, beaches and dunes, which is rare by Dutch standards. A beautiful nature reserve! In the wide polders you can enjoy endless views, after which you continue to two former fortified towns: Retranchement and Sluis, with its many terraces. There are still earthen walls and canals around both towns, beautiful to see!
